This is a visa that gives you the right to live in the United Kingdom permanently and without any restrictions e.g. permission to work or to run your own business.
In order to apply for ILR, you will normally first need to show that you have enough knowledge of language and life in the United Kingdom.
The number of years before you can apply for ILR varies depending on your visa status:
2 years - Married / Unmarried partner / Civil Partner visa
4 years - Turkish National Businessperson
5 years - Work Permit / Tier 1 General (Highly Skilled Worker) / Businessman Visa
5 years - Ancestry Visa
5 years - EEA citizen with Right of Residence
10 years - Lawful stay in the UK on any types of visas
14 years - Unlawful stay in the UK on any types of visas
Once you have your ILR for at least 12 months (in majority of cases) you can then apply for British Citizenship.
Please note: If you spend more than 2 years at once outside the UK your ILR may be withdrawn by the UK Immigration Authorities.
Naturalisation / British Citizenship - Means you become a British Citizen and is eligible to apply for a British passport Fiance visa - This visa is for those who are planning to travel to the United Kingdom to get married or register a civil partnership with someone already settled here and planning to stay in the country afterwards. If you are over 18 and have been living in the United Kingdom for the last five years (or three years if you are married to or a civil partner of a British citizen) you may be able to apply for naturalisation as a British citizen. There are seven requirements you need to meet before you apply:
- you are aged 18 or over
- you are of sound mind and good character
- you intend to continue to live in the United Kingdom
- you can communicate in English, Welsh or Scottish Gaelic to an acceptable degree
- you have sufficient knowledge of life in the United Kingdom
- you have not spent more than 450 days outside the United Kingdom during the five year period or more than 270 days during the 3 year period - (depending on your application form)
- have not spend more than 90 days outside the United Kingdom in the last 12 months of the five-year period
- have not been in breach of the immigration rules at any stage
Please be aware that not all countries allow to have any nationality other that country. Please check with the authorities of your own country before proceeding.
Fiance visa - This visa is for those who are planning to travel to the United Kingdom to get married or register a civil partnership with someone already settled here and planning to stay in the country afterwards. Show information #xob3
In order to be granted this visa you need to show that:
- you plan to marry or register a civil partnership within a reasonable time (usually six months)
- you plan to live together permanently after you are married or have registered a civil partnership
- you have met each other
This visa is usually issued for 6 months with no right to work. When your fiance, fiancee or proposed civil partner arrives in the United Kingdom, he or she will normally be granted permission to stay here for six months, but he/she must not work. After you have married or registered your civil partnership, you husband, wife or civil partner may apply to stay here. If we approve the application, we will give your husband, wife or civil partner permission to live and work here for two years.
Marriage visa - This visa for those already married to and British citizen or a permanent resident. Show information #xob4

In order to be granted a visa spouse will need to meet the following marriage visa requirements:
- Both partners should be at least 21 years old
- Met each other
- Obtained a Certificate of Approval and got married in the UK
- Intend to live together with spouse permanently
- Have sufficient funds to support family living expenses and those of any dependants without claiming public funds
- Have accommodation with at least one separate bedroom
- Children of the marriage who are under 18 years old are can make their application at the same time as the main applicant
Please note: If you have been together for four years or more outside the UK - you may be eligible for indefinite leave to remain/permanent residence in the UK straight away.
After a total period of three years in the UK you may apply for UK citizenship.
Unmarried partners' visa- This visa is for those who is long-term relationship with a British citizen or permanent resident of Great Britain but are not married to them. Show information #xob5
TThis visa is for those who is long-term relationship with a British citizen or permanent resident of Great Britain but are not married to them. In order to be granted a visa the unmarried partner will need to meet the following visa requirements:
- Both partners should be at least 21 years old
- Have to show that this relationship is the only urgent one for both partners
- Provide evidence that you have been living together for at least 2 years
- Intend to live together with partner permanently
- Have sufficient funds to support family living expenses and those of any dependants without claiming public funds
Please note: If you have been living together for more than 4 years you may be eligible for Indefinite Leave to Remain straight away
After a total period of three years in the UK you may apply for UK citizenship.
Ancestry visa - This visa is for citizens of a Commonwealth country with one of grandparents born in the United Kingdom (including the Channel Islands or Isle of Man) and gives a right to live and work in the UK. Show information #xob6
This visa is for citizens of a Commonwealth country with one of grandparents born in the United Kingdom (including the Channel Islands or Isle of Man) and gives a right to live and work in the UK. The applicant can apply for permanent residence after 5 years of Ascestry Visa and then for British Citizenship.
In order to be granted the Ancestry Visa you will need to show that:
- you are a Commonwealth citizen;
- you are aged 17 or over;
- you have a grandparent who was born in the United Kingdom (including the Channel Islands or Isle of Man) or a grandparent who was born in what is now the Republic of Ireland before 31 March 1922;
- you are able to work and you plan to do so in the United Kingdom;
- you can adequately support and accommodate yourself and your dependants without help from public funds
You must obtain permission to enter the United Kingdom on the basis of United Kingdom ancestry before you travel to the United Kingdom. If you have already entered the United Kingdom with a different kind of visa, you cannot switch to the United Kingdom ancestry category. We will only give you permission to stay in the country on the basis of United Kingdom ancestry if:
- you entered the United Kingdom holding entry clearance based on your United Kingdom ancestry; or
- we have already given you leave to remain based on United Kingdom ancestry.
If you come to the United Kingdom in this category, you will not need a work permit.
